Gimme a break!

Gimme a break!

August is usually a time when many people take vacations, a time to get away from it all and relax. As with most things in life recently, things are different this year. Some people are still opting to go on vacation, while others are skipping it. For those who do go, it’s still a different experience and probably not as much of an escape as in the past.

And now, more than ever, we could all use an escape!

My advice to everybody, whether you’re going away or not, is to find some way to escape, rest and relax.

Even if you don’t leave your house, let’s find ways to give ourselves a much needed break from life and reality. As I said in last month’s blog, we are living amid chronic stress within and around us on many levels and our minds and bodies need to be rested and restored.

Here are some ideas about healthy ways to give yourself a break. Some may involve going places you don’t feel comfortable going to, that’s ok, just skip those and focus on the suggestions that would work for you. Also, if you can take any time off from work that’s great, but if you can’t, try to find snippets of time when you can take a break.

Even giving yourself a twenty minute time out from life can help you find some peace.

Ways to escape and get rejuvenated:

  • Go on a picnic, even in your own yard
  • Get lost in a book or movie you’ve never seen
  • Turn off all technology for an hour, or several!
  • Go to the beach or a nearby lake for a day
  • Start a creative project-even something simple like coloring
  • Call or get together with a friend and don’t discuss Covid or politics, etc. reminisce on good times or discuss light hearted topics
  • Watch stand up comedy/read a joke book/watch funny videos on YouTube
  • Go to a quiet park and read or go for a walk
  • Listen to a guided meditation to anywhere you’d like to escape to
  • Listen to music
  • Redecorate a room in your house
  • Give yourself a facial or go get one

Doing some or all of these things won’t make all our stress go away, but it will make it easier to deal with.

Allowing ourselves to escape helps our minds and bodies to function better, be healthier and feel calmer. If you could use some support or help managing your stress, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Be well.
